Aligned Birth Podcast (00:01.662)
Hello, hello, thank you for joining the Align Birth podcast. We are a birth centered podcast, obviously the name Align Birth, but we do have a perinatal flair in that preconception, conception, pregnancy, labor, birth, and then into postpartum. And I always like to say postpartum lasts forever. So the show can last forever in our womanhood.

I'm Dr. Shannon. I'm one of the hosts of the show. I'm prenatal chiropractor. And today we're going to have like a part two of a little series that we've done, an interview series with a maternal occupational therapist, Corey. And the first episode we did, we went into what is maternal OT, what she does, this program that she's created called Let's Retreat and how she supports postpartum moms with

and bringing in resources and looking at postpartum through the lens of occupational therapy and like how to help moms function better and not just survive but thrive in postpartum. So that's my ad lib of what we talked about in the first episode. But today, well, same day, but in this second episode, we're gonna do, she's got a lot of good things on social media.

and some of the stuff that she's posted as far as like, here's some simple things you can do to make an impact in your motherhood. So that's what we're going to chat about today. I don't want to say how many we're going to go over. We may go over more, but right now we've got kind of like three simple habits that will change your life as a mom, but maybe there's more. So you'll have to tune in. So, uh, Corey, welcome again. I'm so excited to chat with you about this.

Kori (01:50.318)
Hi, I love it. Thank you. Yes, do. Last episode, you really helped my ideas flowing. So even though I came on just excited to be part of the podcast, this is turning into an idea session. I love it. Yes.

Aligned Birth Podcast (02:07.346)
You're like, now I'm brainstorming. You're like, I don't know. didn't think about these questions. Well, you know, I realized too, and I'm going to put in the show notes. I really highly recommend you listen to the first episode that we did, but I forgot to ask at the end, like all of your social media stuff and where people can find you and reach out. So I am going to put that in the show notes in that one. And then we'll definitely do that. And this one as well, too. So you can put like, what's your Instagram and all of those things and where people.

Kori (02:13.129)
Yes.

Kori (02:32.173)
Yeah.

Aligned Birth Podcast (02:35.006)
and your website and how to find your programs and that type of thing. So I feel so bad that I forgot to do that.

Kori (02:40.461)
You know, as we were talking, I was kind of thinking, yes, these are great ideas. I need to get them out. And that might be why. I don't share all this. I just tell you what I'm thinking. And then I need to tell everyone my Instagram.

Aligned Birth Podcast (02:59.806)
Yes, so we're gonna do that one. At the end of this one, we'll do it. Make people listen to the whole thing. Okay, is there anything that you want to add to what I said as far as the intro before we dive into like, what are your tools for moms? Like anything that you want to mention as far as maternal OT or the Let's Retreat program or like you intro it.

Kori (03:26.765)
It actually sounded really good. like I was thinking that you take information and you have a way of just giving it back to me and it sounds the way I wanted it to sound, if that makes sense. So that was good.

Aligned Birth Podcast (03:31.304)
Okay.

Aligned Birth Podcast (03:43.454)
Okay, good. Good. I always, don't necessarily, like we record, we capture video with these still. We used to do YouTube channel. We don't really do that anymore. But sometimes my thinking face, I don't necessarily like for camera, because I like to like close my eyes and I'm looking over here and I'm looking over there. So that's how I process everything. So it's not that I have like resting bee face, but I feel like I have like.

I look scattered. So you get to see my, I'm processing everything and trying to put it all together like Mission Impossible and moving things around in my head. But good, I'm glad that that's a good kind of synopsis of the Let's Retreat program. So you had, in one of your Instagram posts, you had kind of talked about, it was three simple things to help

change your life as a mom or just simple habits that you can incorporate into motherhood. So let's go through that.

Kori (04:51.125)
Yes, I would love to. And I have to first say, as I always do, it's just amazing for moms to just, you know, be. They don't have to add anything else. But this is something that when they're ready to say, you know, just enhance things, elevate a little bit, you know, feel a little better, then these are things that would really help. And

Aligned Birth Podcast (05:14.93)
Mm. Mm-hmm.

Kori (05:21.119)
So when I give out information, I try to keep it to like three things. We were talking earlier about having all of this support and all of these resources and ideas for moms can be overwhelming to some and then some want that. So if we start with the three, we can always expand. But starting with three things, I put on there.

I put gratitude, movement, and choose a priority. So I like to start with gratitude because this is something that I did incorporate and it really has made a difference in my life. But and I mean, it's it's thing, but I used to do like five things every day, know, five things every day.

Now, sometimes I'll be laying in bed and before I wake up, I don't necessarily want to get up, but I know, you know, I need to. So in my head, I'll think, what am I grateful for? It's like a good way to incorporate it without really doing anything. I'm laying in bed and I'm just thinking what I'm grateful for. Moms though, in our program, sometimes I'll give them a little journaling sheet.

And that will have a prompt to five things you're grateful for and like little things, you know? And sometimes it's hard once you get down to the bottom. And so the more you do it, the easier it becomes because you kind of look for those things. You say, there's a butterfly. Okay, keep going. But then as you're like, I'm looking for something. The bottom.

is here. Suddenly you're more yes. So I think gratitude is a wonderful place to start because it is kind of just in your mind. You know you can

Aligned Birth Podcast (07:17.854)
You sound like you're in my head. Yes, yes.

Aligned Birth Podcast (07:28.798)
It doesn't have to be a big production. And I think, because I wrote a note that when you said, especially with moms having to do more, I am very, very careful in the office when I'm working with moms, especially postpartum trying to say that we need to do anything more because that already stresses me out. That brings stress. So I always try to look at it, okay, like what are we already doing?

Kori (07:33.612)
Right.

Aligned Birth Podcast (07:58.271)
and then you said elevate and I'm like, oh, I freaking love that word. What can you do to elevate that practice or something in that? And that might be as simple as, this isn't necessarily a postpartum, but it's the first thing that comes to mind. People that do like squats where they're like brushing their teeth or whatever. It's like that silly stuff or whatever. It's not like you're requiring something more of moms. And I think that's an important...

I think that's something important to mention. And it's very much, I think, very much a shift in perspective and shift of the lens that you're looking at things through. And what you said, it will get easier. You'll start to see the butterflies and be like, that's how I am with the sunrise. I I think that's why my office is named that as well too, because every time I see a sunrise, I'm like, oh my God, this is so cool. Or like, especially rainbows. I'm I'm obsessed. I'm like, oh my gosh, this is amazing.

Kori (08:44.685)
Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (08:57.054)
but I don't know if it's just that lifelong practice. It's been a lifelong practice. And it's not always the same. And you would kind of mention like sometimes it is really hard. Like I'll be honest, you can be positive Pollyanna and always grateful. And then you can have some days where it's like, I don't really have five things right now and that's okay.

Kori (09:03.201)
Mm-hmm.

Kori (09:17.581)
Mm hmm. And then pushing that away, like, you know, that if you skip two days kind of thing, you just kind of it falls off. So that's where it can look. Your practice can look different. You can sit down and you can list them out on paper in the journal. You can think, you know, throughout the day or it could be when you're laying in bed, not wanting to get up.

Aligned Birth Podcast (09:23.272)
Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (09:46.878)
Not wanting to get out. When you're like, I'm grateful for this cozy bed. I know, I know.

Kori (09:47.341)
that morning or something, think or really though, whatever you had, it's so simple. And then, yeah.

Aligned Birth Podcast (09:58.087)
What does your gratitude practice look like, I guess, consistently or on a regular basis? Like, are you someone that does like to write or what does yours look like?

Kori (10:13.835)
Yes, so I, this all kind of came about from my shifts in motherhood and I realized like the structure that I needed to help me. And so I have a very structured routine. There is like some, you know, wiggle room. And so every morning it's let me write down five things.

that I'm grateful for. But I hesitate to go through my routine because it's like a,

Aligned Birth Podcast (10:54.44)
because it's structured, do you feel that it's, yeah, mine's super structured too, yeah.

Kori (10:59.277)
Because I am talking with moms that aren't getting sleep, you know, have a baby. what

Aligned Birth Podcast (11:05.68)
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And you're not gonna say, need you to get up an hour early and I need you to sit down. I know, I know. But that's where, yeah, no.

Kori (11:10.197)
Yes, are you kidding? Yeah. So it's like, that's where the you can see where it's going to end up, you know, starting little with little things, right?

Aligned Birth Podcast (11:19.974)
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. That's why I wanted you to mention it. Because mine is very structured. I have a 15-year-old and a 12-year-old though. So I have the ability to do that. I didn't always, you know, look like this. But I do. I get up an hour before everybody else in the house and I have an hour to myself and I do coffee. And I love to write and journal. And that's like, that's me. And that's how I set my intentions for the day. I have a devotional. I go through.

I do the word like whatever I need, wherever that flows. that's where I've gotten to what I have to do. But I'm fully aware that that is where I'm at in this season of life. And so I think that's, I love the beauty of start where you can, fit it in where you can and let it ebb and flow. It doesn't have to look like anybody else's practice as well too. Cause sometimes I'll go for a walk

but I don't get my regular exercise or whatever in the day. And that's when I go through and like, I start doing my gratitude stuff too. I'll go through and like pray for every house and neighborhood. I'm like, I don't know. I just do something. Yeah, it's just something to like also stop thinking about yourself. Cause sometimes I get really, you're really down that rabbit hole. And I'm like, Oh, I want to think about something else. So it's like, I like that. Well, we'll get to the movement piece. I guess I said wait into that a little bit, but it can ebb and flow. And I think

Kori (12:28.043)
I love that, yeah.

Kori (12:37.997)
Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (12:46.811)
Rachel, the co-host on the podcast, always talks about in birth, we've got to be like bamboo, like firm but flexible. And I've always loved that. And I think there's an aspect of that too with these simple habits. So don't be afraid to share what your habit looks like. Yeah, I think that's kind of.

Kori (13:14.251)
I know and I like that and that's another thing. I so I think part of for me part of sharing as people are like why you know why would you wake up that early? Why would you do that? And yeah, yeah, so I'm just gonna do me but then through that coming up with all these things and saying wow like this is incredible.

Aligned Birth Podcast (13:29.575)
I'm a better person. You don't want me to not do that.

Kori (13:43.918)
And I want to share that through programs like sprinkled in, you know, and even if you say like you have this incredible routine, if you have support, it makes it easier. Like if you have other people that get it and then it makes it it normalizes it right. It normalizes more gratitude and all these things.

Aligned Birth Podcast (13:49.439)
Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (14:01.546)
yeah.

Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (14:08.959)
Mm-hmm.

Kori (14:13.837)
So that's kind of where into the let's retreat is like, let's normalize these things.

Aligned Birth Podcast (14:13.865)
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. It's...

Aligned Birth Podcast (14:20.445)
Yeah, it's not a, I have a book written in my head and it's called Stop Shitting on Yourself, like S-H-O-U-L-D, should. And that's where I feel like there's a bit of this too in that this is not what you should be doing, right? But you can still talk about and mention these are the things, yeah, that could help, some simple things, but not that you should. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, yeah, no, no, no, no.

Kori (14:36.991)
Yes, these are things that could help.

Kori (14:42.933)
You're so right. Thank you. And I do. hear mom say should all the time and I'm sure I do that as well. But I try to stop myself.

Aligned Birth Podcast (14:48.585)
Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (14:52.095)
I've had to be very mindful about that word as well too, because I'm like, ooh, I don't like it. And then if I do say it, I'm like, ooh, what am I trying to get at there? Anywho, that's sidebar. Okay, what is our next simple habit?

Kori (15:10.007)
So then the next one, we go into movement. And of course, that is starting small, cleared by your doctor, all that. But movement, it immediately changes your brain and gets you in a better state of mind. if you can just like, I'm thinking take a couple steps outside.

Aligned Birth Podcast (15:19.892)
Mm-hmm.

Kori (15:35.914)
I think that includes my nature walk as well, of course, nature. I actually started movement. I had this idea with my second. I don't even remember after my first, but after my second, I was like, I want to start exercising, like all the things I'm going to get things together. And I knew I had this end goal to return to work at three months.

And so I knew I needed to let myself rest. So I was like, okay, at a month, I'm gonna start kind of moving things around, right? Well, whenever I was cleared and able to start exercising, that's when I started running. But I like went too hard and just because it was like all these months stored up of kind of like,

Aligned Birth Podcast (16:29.129)
Mm-hmm.

Kori (16:35.859)
I wasn't feeling good, you know, and I was like, you know what, I'm done with that. I'm a new person now. I'm gonna just wake up early, I'm gonna run, I'm gonna do all the things. And I pushed myself and that kept pushing myself to where I couldn't walk for like a solid month because I had Achilles tendonitis and it was...

So terrible, but I was not listening to my body and I was not I was just so like I should be doing all these things, right and so Yeah, can do it now. It's fine. I'm good and So it really was like okay start slow and so that's where Stretching like yoga and stretching and that's where I started doing that just in the morning like just creating the time

Aligned Birth Podcast (17:07.871)
Hmm, I did them before. Why can I not do them now?

Aligned Birth Podcast (17:21.577)
Mm-hmm.

Kori (17:27.979)
I, you you start thinking about it. You start thinking, okay, here's what I want to do. And then eventually you're ready for it. And then, okay, when am I going to fit this in? If I go back to work, I have to do it at this time because when else am I going to fit it in? I don't know. And so kind of creating a space for that and knowing I have to start slow, just anything, you know, any, and even, yeah, just some gentle stretching, just moving and taking

Aligned Birth Podcast (17:51.071)
Mm-hmm.

Kori (17:58.124)
the baby for a walk, you know, around, just those things make such a difference.

Aligned Birth Podcast (18:06.835)
definitely, definitely. I'm a big fan of movement. My mom and stepdad were in recently and they asked me what is, how did he phrase it? Not like what is the hardest part of what I do, but like something along those lines. And I was like, the first thing that came to mind was getting people to move, like on a regular.

Basis to get their heart rate up now that is not I'm not speaking from a postpartum lens right now I'm just thinking like collectively the collective I just we I think would be a lot healthier if we moved a lot more regularly So it is an important practice to have You know one of my favorites with moms and starting back postpartum, I always love diaphragmatic breathing

Kori (18:42.477)
Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (19:04.755)
dead bug exercises, crocodile breathing where you lay on your belly. That's great if you had a C-section, because that can help prevent some of that pooch that you have. I always try to say you're different. It's not good or bad after having a baby, but this is not like a, I don't like to call it like a comeback into things. I always called it a come into, because you're like a new person now.

because you have the cells of your children in you for the rest of your life, which is really kind cool. So I like to look at it like that. And when we're looking at movement, like you're going to start at a different place than before. So we've got to go back to some of the basics. And so it's very difficult in motherhood though, when it's like, I've already been doing this. It's, you know, like it's, I totally see and get, and I lived it. I mean, I too, I'm a runner.

and I went back way too soon, probably both times. I had hip pain. I spiked a fever, that's how I knew. I had spiked a fever and mastitis, all of these things. At the time, I didn't know I was doing too much. when I look back on it now, why was I so, you gotta get this specific type of movement in. And so you really have to shift, I think, some of those expectations on it, knowing that it's gonna come, but it's gonna...

can be different, you know? And now I'm stronger, faster runner than I've ever been. So like it comes, but it's a very, it is really difficult. It is really difficult, especially for moms who had been moving to know that like this movement, I remember after my V-back, my second, I wanted to go, to the gym to walk on the treadmill. And I was so excited. And I still had the like stupid mesh underwear.

Kori (20:34.519)
Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (21:02.333)
and like the pad. Obviously, I didn't need to be walking on a treadmill at that point, but I was so excited. Like I just had my V back. I feel great. Like all these things. And I remember I peed on myself and like could not stop because obviously I just had a baby like a few weeks ago and I was mortified and so upset and luckily the pad like caught it all. But I will never forget that. Now looking back and I'm like, why?

Kori (21:03.949)
you

Kori (21:21.377)
Yeah.

Aligned Birth Podcast (21:29.469)
And it's, wanted to move again in the way that I had, but, ugh, that's not always the case.

Kori (21:32.205)
Mm-hmm. Yes. And another thing to put on top of that that I was thinking about as we're talking about movement is support. So my husband has been super supportive and I think finding like that a couple of support ways that have happened. So he said, okay, know, mornings are your time. That's when you're going to have and

Aligned Birth Podcast (21:49.513)
Mm-hmm.

Kori (22:02.92)
I felt so guilty like if my kids woke up, I would stop my routine. So I'd get really frustrated. Stop my routine, shift to them. Even though he's like, I've got this. just couldn't, I don't know. It's just like that feeling. So when they say, let people support you, that's kind of like you have, you might have someone in your corner.

Aligned Birth Podcast (22:17.629)
Hmm. Mm-hmm.

Kori (22:30.478)
like, I'll watch the baby, whatever, you got to make time for yourself. So that and then another thing I went to, I started at the YMCA, because they could watch my kids for two hours, I could go work out, join a class, go to the sauna. I'm like, is this? And people would say, oh, you're a stay at home mom, you probably don't have any time for yourself. And I'm like,

Aligned Birth Podcast (22:46.751)
Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (22:50.953)
Mm-hmm. I know.

Kori (22:59.022)
mean, this is great. Yeah, but I mean that.

Aligned Birth Podcast (22:59.359)
You're like, I've got two hours. Because you were grateful for it. You would use your gratitude.

Kori (23:06.488)
There you go, yes, no. That was an alleyway though, like having different people to help me do those things. Cause it was all on me. You know, you really figure it out.

Aligned Birth Podcast (23:11.775)
Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (23:20.977)
I love that you said use the support people though. You got to like, and I know that there are certain, you know, situations and circumstances where, you know, husbands travel a lot, they don't have family in town. Like I get that. And so every situation is different, but use the why. if you have the option, you know, things like that, like find those, you know, support aspects as well.

Kori (23:32.567)
Yes.

Kori (23:38.54)
Yes.

Kori (23:42.081)
It is. And that's like where I say I'm so grateful for that support because I knew not everyone has that. But from an OT lens, holistic, what can we do? You know what? Even another thing that I love adding in, like movement with the baby. Let's go for, I can't, you know, it's not going to look like how I want it to look, but we're going to go on a stroller walk or, you know,

Aligned Birth Podcast (23:51.583)
Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (24:03.187)
Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (24:10.367)
What can I celebrate right now?

Kori (24:13.174)
Yeah, what can I do with what I have? So yes, it will look very different.

Aligned Birth Podcast (24:18.759)
Mm-hmm. Yes, and that's okay. You just kind of accept that. Okay, what would be the next one that you would mention?

Kori (24:29.058)
So, yes, number three, change your life by just choosing one priority. So really limiting down when you have expectations of, well, my baby sleeps, I gotta do the laundry, I gotta do all the things. I'm also gonna get dinner made and I'm gonna exercise and all of these things. Don't, you know.

Here are the things you would like to get done. You know, let's sprinkle them in. But what is one thing I can do today that will shift me forward? What is one thing? Is it the walk? Is it just getting and playing with the baby? Because if you put so much on your plate or expect so much, it really is, you just will.

You won't thrive. And almost resent your kids because you're like, I can't. Why are you crying? I can't.

Aligned Birth Podcast (25:27.219)
Mm-mm, it's, yeah.

Aligned Birth Podcast (25:34.003)
You're interrupting this list that I had. Hello, I'm speaking from truth, my own experience. Yeah. And I think that's really hard for any sort of like type A list taking person as well too, to be like, okay, I've got to manage my expectations of what this, what it really looks like day by day. You know, I know that's really tough.

Kori (25:40.321)
Yes, I know.

Yes.

Kori (25:59.235)
Mm-hmm.

Yes, yes, because, you know, being home with a baby, say, like a newborn, and in your head, you're thinking, well, I'm home, I should have all should have all these things done. Let's know if I do this one thing, it will be good. So yeah.

Aligned Birth Podcast (26:17.375)
Should see. That's right. huh.

Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (26:28.351)
I love it. I have five pillars of health. We've done an episode on this before. I don't remember what it's called. I don't remember what episode it was, but I have like five pillars of health. We did something that was like five pillars of like birth or pregnancy or something along those lines where we kind of like interwove those things together. And so I have it's nutrition, it's movement.

sleep, mindset, then chiropractic adjustments or like nervous system regulation. And I like those as, and kind of how you had mentioned like the choosing a priority, I like those pillars in that if I am experiencing something, whether I'm feeling anxious in some way, if I'm feeling

flustered if I'm feeling overwhelmed or I'm feeling really exhausted. There's something, if I've checked in and I have that awareness where I'm like, something's off, I like to go to those pillars to be like, okay, how's my nutrition been? How's my movement been? How's my sleep been? How's my mindset? And then like, have I taken care of my nervous system? Have I been adjusted or anything? So it's not like I look at it and like, okay.

I gotta do these five things every day. Like it's more of a, I know that these things are all important, but am I missing an area? And then it can go into that like, choose a priority. Like, hey, maybe it's gonna focus on like the nutrition for a minute. Cause we've, you know, I've got a lot of sports families and God bless them, but that's a big issue because we're eating out all the time because we're traveling stuff. So I know it's hard. So it's kind of like, can we shift it to the weekend and we eat in and we cook in and we do something different?

I just, it's nice to have that to hone in on and say, okay, and these are things that you can do, you know, actively on your own to say, okay, this is what I'm gonna do to kind of care for myself. And so that's what reminds me when you mentioned that, choose a priority, it can even be that like body scan that you talk about as well too and be like, okay, what does that priority need to be? And maybe it's play with your baby.

I love that. Yes, and I love that. And when I first had the idea for Let's Retreat, it was going back to work thinking, I'm supposed to do all of these things. Like, I'm supposed to have, you know, have all these practices in place, do all these things. How am going to fit it in? And I'm supposed to be present with my baby. I mean, okay. So what and

Mm-hmm.

Kori (29:15.438)
Also, I will say, all the fun stuff to do with my baby is during the week. So can we have some kind of something for moms to get everything kind of in one little program? Can you come for an hour and leave and feel like, wow, okay, I actually, I'm making progress. I'm doing okay.

I've got support, I feel good, I've gotten my nature kick in, I've gotten a little movement in, you know, I've done some gratitude. Yeah, that's...

Aligned Birth Podcast (29:57.673)
Mm-hmm. Yeah, and when you look at it like that can touch on all of those components and just that one, you know little segment section of time so Anything else you want to mention with let's retreat

Kori (30:38.912)
Yes. yes. So on my website, I usually will send out like on Instagram or social media a post, but I keep it on my website, what kind of things we're doing. And then if you're on the email list, I send emails, just letting people know what is going on and where to register for things. They'll be marked like the ACWRTH if it's at ACWRTH.

It'll be marked, everything will be marked where it is and where to register.

I will add one thing. So I do think limits on social media are so important. And I have basically, I say I've been living under a rock because I don't do all this social media stuff. But it's like I'm getting into it the first time.

you do get to meet a lot of people. And then I thought if people are on here, let's use this for good and let's put those little tidbits in. So I would say my page right now is just trying to be, trying to show what our programs are about through that. But I do hope that people come and join in person.

Aligned Birth Podcast (32:04.265)
Mm-hmm.

Aligned Birth Podcast (32:17.799)
Yeah, no, I always have this, I call it this like love hate relationship with social media because I have found so many good providers, local and people that we've interviewed on the show and people that like, now, like we just work so well together. So I'm always thankful for that. But then it can also like suck the soul from your body. So I'm like, yes, I'm all for limits, but then using it for good. Like that's where, yeah.

Not the doom scrolling, but like putting some uplifting things there. Now, you do a great job. I love the stuff that you post, yeah. You're welcome. Again, thank you so much for being on the show with me today. Check out the first episode in this series that we did as well too, don't forget that. And then episodes should be coming out kind of every other week. So be sure to stay tuned.

Kori (32:50.712)
